PCMG’s Electricity profit recovery service helps Newcastle College to secure lost profits...

Newcastle College is one of the largest further and higher education colleges in the UK, with nearly 30,000 students. In July 2008 the college received a Grade 1 Outstanding Ofsted inspection. The college has also been awarded the prestigious Learning and Skills Beacon Award status.

Both the College and PCMG have close links with The Energy Consortium (TEC) and through this relationship continue to deliver to Universities and Colleges across the UK.

The College engaged with PCMG , as a result of the TEC relationship to undertake an in-depth forensic analysis of their historical electricity costs. Although there is some complexity through operating across several sites, the college believed everything to be in order with their electricity accounts. However, there was a desire to confirm this through PCMG’s electricity audit service given there was no financial risks involved. PCMG work purely on a contingency fee basis.

Conducting the analysis over a number of weeks, PCMG identified several significant potential anomalies based upon the half hourly supplier data over a 3-year period, and commenced activity to collate additional data to substantiate the refund claims. Following discussions with the College, PCMG then approached the electricity suppliers and the relevant DNO with the claims and negotiated a settlement. This settlement generated several refunds to the College and enabled ongoing savings of 3.8% of annual electricity expenditure – all without moving supplier or any costly RFP process.

Becky Ferry, Environment Officer said “Given PCMG’s proven track record in the recovery audit industry we were more than happy for them to undertake an analysis of our historical electricity accounts to see what the outcome would be. We were very happy with the findings and I would certainly recommend PCMG’s services to any business who want peace of mind that they are only paying for the services they receive”

Ian Yates, PCMG Managing Director added; “PCMG has extensive experience of auditing utility costs, we have identified over 500 different claims types, a figure which is growing all the time. Often the claims we identify are for relatively small amounts, however these can add-up to significant sums and this is money our clients are being charged in error or for services not being received – money that can be utilised elsewhere.
